Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had allowed ten goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or was there ever a binding element maintaining its structure to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, but then he admitted that the management had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Speculation that he could resign were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club became as messy in their performances as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, observers have struggled to determine if they are improving or imploding.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Comeback

One individual continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this year. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, Lazio were attempting to extend his stay for another season. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in that campaign, the vast majority of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to work out the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
