The esteemed football figure has stated that he is avoiding a comeback in football management, noting that it would be tough to recreate the special mission he encountered as the national team coach.

He suggested his intention to dedicate his efforts toward supporting young people and addressing what he called a dominant downbeat story now found in the country.

Exploring Different Paths Outside of Football

Speaking on air, Southgate was prompted regarding rumors linking him with available jobs in the top flight and elsewhere.

“Leading my country gave my work in football a deeper meaning and purpose,” he responded. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

Dedication to Positive Examples

Ahead of the launch of his forthcoming publication, his leadership-focused book, he shared that he is “very passionate” about providing role models for young people, drawing on insights from his period as head coach of the national side from 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

He maintains that his journey managing the squad, during which the team shifted from being strongly criticized to broadly loved, holds general lessons.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he explained. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Family Life and Guiding Young People

Drawing on his family life, the coach observed: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He added: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Togetherness Beyond Discord

Southgate stressed that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the public discourse often highlights conflict.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he said. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

His new release, the book Dear England, is expected to present deeper reflections on leadership and public spirit based on his notable time in football.
