Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had scored just one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, was unable to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.
